Brewers 8, Diamondbacks 5
At Maryvale Baseball Park
At the plate: RF David Peralta launched his first home run of the spring, a deep blast to center field off Brewers RHP Joba Chamberlain. It was also Peralta’s first homer since undergoing wrist surgery last year. “The more I play, the better I feel at home plate, and everything is going to come,” Peralta said. “I feel really good, and I’m healthy.” Peralta said he hasn’t been focused on hitting for power this spring. “I’m just concentrating on getting a base hit and making good contact, and doubles and home runs are going to come,” he said. “I like to put the ball in the gap and make good contact. If you make good contact, one of those balls is going to go.” SS Ketel Marte, who had a pair of doubles on Wednesday night, had three hits on Thursday, all singles.
On the mound: LHP Robbie Ray said he threw a down-the-middle fastball that Brewers 3B Travis Shaw hit for a monster home run in the first inning but was otherwise satisfied with his outing. He thought he commanded his pitches better after the first and liked how he felt with his off-speed stuff, including a change-up he’s still tinkering with. “It’s getting there,” he said, referring to his grip on the pitch. “I’m just trying to find a spot on the ball where it’s comfortable, where it’s coming out of my hand and it feels comfortable. That’s the main thing.” It was a rough day for a trio of relievers: RHP Tyler Jones (two earned runs), LHP Andrew Chafin (solo home run) and RHP Enrique Burgos (one run).
Extra bases: Manager Torey Lovullo was unhappy with a handful of defensive plays. “We played a little sloppy baseball, and I think that kind of added to the frustration of the day,” he said. “Those are things we need to tighten up. We will.” 3B Jack Reinheimer let a hard-hit ball get through him in the third, and 1B Daniel Descalso missed a popup near home plate.
Friday’s games: Diamondbacks (ss) RHP Shelby Miller vs. Mariners (ss) RHP Yovani Gallardo, 1:10 p.m., Salt River Fields; Diamondbacks (ss) RHP Archie Bradley vs. Athletics RHP Raul Alcantara, 1:05 p.m., Hohokam Stadium.
