Closer Fernando Rodney says he’s expecting to make his Cactus League debut on Thursday and likely will pitch once more before departing for the World Baseball Classic early next week.
“I’m feeling good,” Rodney said. “I’m in good shape. We’ve got a good group here — a lot of talent, a lot of young guys. I think if we can put everything together we can compete in the division.”
Rodney smiled when asked about his excitement for pitching again in the WBC. Four years ago, he registered seven saves in the tournament, including one in the championship game against Puerto Rico.
“The last out that we got at the WBC, it was something amazing,” he said. “You know, you play baseball here, but when you represent more than 10 million people – that’s a lot of people you represent. I’m very proud of that.”
Rodney said he threw a live batting practice session on Sunday and another bullpen session on Tuesday. He thinks he’ll pitch in one of the Diamondbacks’ two games on Thursday, then again on Sunday.
