Diamondbacks 6, Reds 1
At the plate: The Diamondbacks took advantage of a pair of errors by Reds SS Arismendy Alcantara in the second inning to score a pair of runs. They scored again in the fifth when RF David Peralta laced a single into left field to drive home 3B Kris Negron. Diamondbacks LF Reymond Fuentes launched a three-run home run into the grassy area beyond right field in the eighth, hitting the first pitch he saw from RHP Tyler Mahle.
On the mound: LHP Patrick Corbin looked sharp in his two innings of work, striking out three without allowing a run. The only batter who reached was leadoff man CF Billy Hamilton, who walked in a 10-pitch at-bat before being erased on a double-play ball. “I wanted to go out there and locate my fastball,” said Corbin, who topped out at 96 mph. “That was probably the biggest thing. I was able to do that. I threw a couple of change-ups and my slider. Just try to mix it up. I think the biggest thing to take away is feeling good coming out of that and start building up the pitch count.” LHP Anthony Banda followed with two perfect innings, and RHP J.J. Hoover, LHP Brian Matusz and LHP Andrew Chafin each tossed a scoreless inning.
Extra bases: 3B Jake Lamb was scratched from the lineup due to a stomach illness, manager Torey Lovullo said, adding that Lamb might be absent from camp on Tuesday, as well. CF A.J. Pollock raced to the warning track to make a catch on a drive by C Tucker Barnhart leading off the third inning. SS Ketel Marte and 2B Brandon Drury turned an easy double play in the first inning on a ground ball by Alcantara. The win was the Diamondbacks’ first of the Cactus League.
Tuesday’s game: Diamondbacks RHP Taijuan Walker vs. Rangers RHP Nick Martinez, 1:05 p.m., Surprise Stadium.
