At Salt River Fields

On the mound: RHP Shelby Miller again displayed impressive stuff, but at times he had trouble putting away Mariners hitters, leading to a high pitch count and a somewhat abbreviated outing. Miller still managed to strike out eight in 3 1/3 innings, giving up just three hits and one run. “It’s nice to get some swings and misses,” Miller said. “Strikeouts are always nice. It kind of lets you know where your stuff is at. Today, I felt sharp, but I wasn’t near as efficient as I need to be.” Miller’s fastball was routinely in the 96-98 mph range. LHP Andrew Chafin struck out two of the three batters he faced in a perfect fifth inning. In Mesa, RHP Archie Bradley allowed one run on five hits in five innings of work against the Athletics. His only real blemish was a first-pitch home run in the fourth inning by 3B Ryon Healy, who belted his fourth homer of the spring. “It felt good,” said Bradley, who had no walks and two strikeouts. “I thought we had a real good game plan, we executed it, we played great defense, scored some runs early. It was kind of every facet you want to see from your team as you get into the later part of spring.” RHP Zack Godley (two innings) and RHP Braden Shipley (1 1/3 innings) turned in scoreless outings vs. the A’s.

At the plate: In Mesa, Chris Owings made the start in right field and went 2 for 3, including a two-run triple off the left field wall in the first to give the Diamondbacks a 2-0 lead. 2B Brandon Drury went 3 for 3 with a single, a triple and a run-scoring double. He tried to stretch the double into a triple but was thrown out at the bag. Drury is hitting .459 (17 for 37) with five doubles and two triples in the Cactus League.

Extra bases: SS Nick Ahmed dived for a sharply hit ground ball, and though he came up short, the attempt suggests he’s not concerned about his surgically repaired hip. CF Gregor Blanco singled to right then stole second and scored in the third inning.

Saturday’s game: Diamondbacks RHP Zack Greinke vs. Netherlands (WBC) TBD, 1:10 p.m., Salt River Fields.
