At the plate: The Diamondbacks appear to have lost OF Socrates Brito to an injury after he jammed his left ring finger on a slide into home plate. Manager Torey Lovullo called it a dislocation, and he said Brito was being evaluated by a doctor on Wednesday evening. He did not rule out the possibility of surgery. Just last week, Lovullo told reporters he had asked his players not to slide headfirst. “This is a perfect reason why we strongly encourage feet-first sliding,” he said. “We’ll continue to harp on this. This is a reason why. It’s very unfortunate for Socrates.” CF Evan Marzilli crushed a three-run homer in the eighth inning.

On the mound: After RHP Zack Greinke gave up two runs in 2 2/3 innings, RHP Braden Shipley threw 2 1/3 innings without allowing a run, giving up two hits and a walk. “He looked great,” Lovullo said. “He was executing all of his pitches and he looked very comfortable. And he was down in the zone.” RHP Kevin Jepsen and RHP Evan Marshall each allowed a run. RHP Jimmie Sherfy worked a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two.

Extra bases: C Oscar Hernandez earned Lovullo’s praise for his work behind the plate, including blocking several balls in the dirt to prevent runners from advancing. “A lot of things are easy for him behind the plate,” Lovullo said. LF Yasmany Tomas lost a ball in the sun during the third inning, and CF A.J. Pollock was unable to get there in time to make the play. Lovullo said Pollock and Tomas had talked about the possibility of such a play occurring beforehand. “The fact that they talked about it, that A.J. knew he had to get over there to assist him is something we’re working on,” Lovullo said. “Now we just need to finish the execution of the play.”

Thursday’s game: Diamondbacks LHP Patrick Corbin vs. White Sox RHP Lucas Giolito, 1:05 p.m., Camelback Ranch.
