Boivin: Addition by contrition; Diamondbacks booth better with Mark Grace

By Paola Boivin, azcentral sports

During his four-month stint in Tent City, Mark Grace watched a black widow spin a silk residence next to his bunk. It was an eight-legged metaphor of his recent life, a reminder that adversity is often a short hop away.

He knows now. And has persevered with the proper dose of contrition, which is why the announcement Wednesday that he would be returning to the airwaves was well-received by many fans.

He was trending on Twitter in Phoenix much of the day, and an azcentral Facebook post asking for reaction about his return was applauded by most.

Grace belongs on TV. He delivers the right mix of knowledge, humor and anecdotes in a sport that often takes itself too seriously.

His role changes from the last time he was in the booth. Fox Sports Arizona hired him as a pregame and postgame host for home games alongside Jody Jackson or Todd Walsh. Brandon Webb will work games Grace does not.

“I’ve experienced it all,” he said. “World championship teams. Lousy teams. I’ve felt the euphoria of a 10-game winning streak and the doldrums of a 10-game losing streak. I know what the clubhouse is like.”

And he knows how to communicate those experiences in a fan-friendly way.
