Diamondbacks bench coach Ron Gardenhire has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and he expects to leave the team to undergo surgery in the middle of April.
Gardenhire said blood work showed elevated PSA levels, and further tests confirmed the finding. He said his doctor is optimistic that they detected it quickly enough that he’ll only need surgery.
“The great thing about baseball is we get physicals every year,” Gardenhire, 59, said. “We get blood tests done every year. The best part about it for me is I know it wasn’t there last January. They believe it’s caught early and now it’s about getting the thing taken out.”
